1 - MOSTEIRO DE sANTA mARIA<\/a><\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

O Mosteiro de Santa Maria da Vit\u00f3ria, tamb\u00e9m designado Mosteiro da Batalha \u00e9, indiscutivelmente, uma das mais belas obras da arquitetura portuguesa e europeia.<\/p>

Este excecional conjunto arquitet\u00f3nico resultou do cumprimento de uma promessa feita pelo rei D. Jo\u00e3o I, em agradecimento pela vit\u00f3ria em Aljubarrota, batalha travada em 14 de agosto de 1385, que lhe assegurou o trono e garantiu a independ\u00eancia de Portugal.<\/p>

As obras prolongaram-se por mais de 150 anos, atrav\u00e9s de v\u00e1rias fases de constru\u00e7\u00e3o. Esta dura\u00e7\u00e3o justifica a exist\u00eancia, nas suas propostas art\u00edsticas, de solu\u00e7\u00f5es g\u00f3ticas (predominantes) manuelinas e um breve apontamento renascentista. V\u00e1rios acrescentos foram introduzidos no projeto inicial, resultando um vasto conjunto mon\u00e1stico que atualmente apresenta uma igreja, dois claustros com depend\u00eancias anexas e dois pante\u00f5es reais, a Capela do Fundador e as Capelas Imperfeitas.<\/p>

D. Jo\u00e3o I doou-o \u00e0 ordem de S. Domingos, doa\u00e7\u00e3o a que n\u00e3o foram alheios os bons of\u00edcios do Doutor Jo\u00e3o das Regras, chanceler do reino, e de Frei Louren\u00e7o Lampreia, confessor do monarca.<\/p>

Na posse dos dominicanos at\u00e9 \u00e0 extin\u00e7\u00e3o das ordens religiosas em 1834, o monumento foi depois incorporado na Fazenda P\u00fablica, estando hoje na depend\u00eancia da Dire\u00e7\u00e3o-Geral do Patrim\u00f3nio Cultural (DGPC), assumindo-se como um espa\u00e7o cultural, tur\u00edstico e devocional.<\/p>

Monumento nacional, integra a Lista do Patrim\u00f3nio da Humanidade definida pela UNESCO, desde 1983.<\/p>

The Monastery of Santa Maria da Vit\u00f3ria – Monastery of Batalha<\/b><\/p>

The Monastery of Santa Maria da Vit\u00f3ria, also known as the Monastery of Batalha is without doubt one of the most beautiful examples of Portuguese and European architecture.<\/p>

This dazzling architectural ensemble was born out of a promise the King, Jo\u00e3o I, made in thanks for his victory at Aljubarrota, a battle fought on August 14, 1385, which assured him the throne and guaranteed independence for Portugal.<\/p>

The construction took over 150 years, across various phases. This is the reason why one can find not only gothic style (for the most part), but also manualine style and some renaissance touches. A number of alterations were made to the initial project, resulting in a vast monastic complex that today includes a church, two cloisters with annexed dependencies and two royal pantheons, the Founder\u2019s Chapel and the Unfinished Chapels.<\/p>

King Jo\u00e3o I gave it to the order of Saint Dominic, under the good auspices of Doctor Jo\u00e3o das Regras, chancellor of the kingdom, and Friar Louren\u00e7o Lampreia, confessor of the monarch.<\/p>

In the Dominicans\u2019 possession until the extinction of the religious orders in 1384, the monument was then incorporated within the Public Exchequer, and today it is a cultural, touristic and devotional Monument under the jurisdiction of IGESPAR, national Monument also declared World Heritage by UNESCO, in 1983.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Obra arquitet\u00f3nica de caracter\u00edsticas singulares, o Castelo de Porto de M\u00f3s viveu v\u00e1rias fases, sendo, na sua g\u00e9nese, uma fortaleza que tinha por principal miss\u00e3o o controlo e a vigil\u00e2ncia sobre as principais vias que atravessavam o Maci\u00e7o Calc\u00e1rio Estremenho, ligando o M\u00e9dio Tejo e a Alta Estremadura.<\/p>

O castelo com a planta atual resulta da constru\u00e7\u00e3o atribu\u00edda a D. Sancho I, em 1200, altura em que as incurs\u00f5es mu\u00e7ulmanas em territ\u00f3rio ocupado pelos crist\u00e3os ainda se faziam sentir. Antes desta edifica\u00e7\u00e3o, deveria haver uma atalaia mu\u00e7ulmana, certamente de menores dimens\u00f5es e que passou para m\u00e3os crist\u00e3s presumivelmente em 1147, em virtude do processo de conquista vindo de norte, comandado por D. Afonso Henriques.<\/p>

Ao longo dos s\u00e9culos, o castelo acumulou influ\u00eancias militares, g\u00f3ticas e renascentistas. Apresenta planta pentagonal com torre\u00f5es de refor\u00e7o nos \u00e2ngulos e uma quinta torre atualmente pouco percet\u00edvel no conjunto edificado. Esta quinta torre resultou das obras de beneficia\u00e7\u00e3o promovidas por D. Dinis e destinou-se a conferir maior conforto \u00e0 fortaleza que, com a sua vila, o rei concedeu a Isabel de Arag\u00e3o, sua esposa. Os dois torre\u00f5es que comp\u00f5em a fachada principal s\u00e3o encimados por coruch\u00e9us, com acabamento de cer\u00e2mica verde, supostamente por rela\u00e7\u00e3o com a cor de Afonso, IV Conde de Our\u00e9m.<\/p>

Na v\u00e9spera da Batalha de Aljubarrota, em 1385, o castelo cumpre a sua \u00faltima \u201cmiss\u00e3o militar\u201d. Aqui e na vila se aquartela o ex\u00e9rcito portugu\u00eas. Na sequ\u00eancia da batalha, D. Jo\u00e3o I doa o condado de Porto de M\u00f3s a D. Nuno Alvares Pereira que, anos mais tarde, o lega ao seu neto D. Afonso, IV Conde de Our\u00e9m. Este acrescentou-lhe conforto, salubridade e todo um conjunto de pormenores decorativos inspirados num renascimento italiano emergente que conferem \u00e0 fortaleza o aspeto apala\u00e7ado que conhecemos hoje.<\/p>

O abandono e terramotos como o de 1755 provocaram a ru\u00edna do castelo. A classifica\u00e7\u00e3o de 1910 como Monumento Nacional e as campanhas de reconstru\u00e7\u00e3o e restauro de 1936 a 1960 fizeram ressurgir o castelo. Nos anos 90 do s\u00e9culo XX, nova interven\u00e7\u00e3o conferiu-lhe melhores condi\u00e7\u00f5es de acolhimento. Recentemente, o monumento foi dotado de maior acessibilidade.<\/p>

An architectural work of singular characteristics, the Castle of Porto de M\u00f3s went through several phases, being, in its genesis, a fortress whose main mission was to control and monitor the main roads that crossed the Estremenho Limestone Massif, connecting the Middle Tagus and Upper Extremadura.<\/p>

The castle with its current plan results from the construction attributed to D. Sancho I, in 1200, when the Muslim incursions into territory occupied by Christians were still being felt. Before this construction, there should have been a Muslim watchtower, certainly smaller and that passed into Christian hands, presumably in 1147, due to the process of conquest from the north, commanded by D. Afonso Henriques.<\/p>

Over the centuries, the castle has accumulated military, Gothic and Renaissance influences. It has a pentagonal plan with turrets at the corners and a fifth tower that is currently barely perceptible in the building complex. This fifth tower resulted from the improvement works promoted by D. Dinis and was intended to give greater comfort to the fortress that, with its town, the king granted to Isabel de Arag\u00e3o, his wife. The two turrets that make up the main fa\u00e7ade are surmounted by spires, with a green ceramic finish, supposedly due to the color of Afonso, IV Count of Our\u00e9m.<\/p>

On the eve of the Battle of Aljubarrota, in 1385, the castle fulfills its last \u201cmilitary mission\u201d. Here and in the village the Portuguese army is stationed. Following the battle, D. Jo\u00e3o I donates the county of Porto de M\u00f3s to D. Nuno Alvares Pereira who, years later, bequeaths it to his grandson D. Afonso, IV Count of Our\u00e9m. This added comfort, health and a whole set of decorative details inspired by an emerging Italian renaissance that give the fortress the palatial appearance we know today.<\/p>

Abandonment and earthquakes like the one in 1755 caused the castle to be ruined. The 1910 classification as a National Monument and the reconstruction and restoration campaigns from 1936 to 1960 brought the castle back to life. In the 90s of the 20th century, a new intervention gave it better reception conditions. Recently, the monument has been given greater accessibility.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

3 - Castelo de Leiria <\/a><\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Vindo da cidade, o turista entra no Castelo de Leiria pela Porta da Albacara. No interior do recinto defensivo, muito bem conservado, iremos encontrar v\u00e1rios motivos de interesse: a Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Pena, os antigos Pa\u00e7os Reais, a Torre de Menagem e sobretudo a bela vista sobre a paisagem envolvente.<\/p>

Este conjunto arquitect\u00f3nico relembra a origem medieval da cidade, quando em 1135 foi conquistada por D. Afonso Henriques. Na altura, o primeiro rei de Portugal mandou construir uma pequena capela dedicada a Nossa Senhora da Penha e entregou este reduto militar a D. Paio Guterres, o primeiro Alcaide de Leiria. As muralhas seriam refor\u00e7adas apenas no final do s\u00e9culo, pelo rei D. Sancho I, depois da conquista definitiva pelos crist\u00e3os.<\/p>

Longe da sua fun\u00e7\u00e3o inicial, o Castelo voltou a ter import\u00e2ncia na hist\u00f3ria da cidade no in\u00edcio do s\u00e9c. XX, quando foi alvo de um inovador restauro por Ernesto Korrodi e pela Liga dos Amigos do Castelo, cujas iniciativas marcaram a paisagem urbana de Leiria. Seguidor tardio do esp\u00edrito rom\u00e2ntico e esfor\u00e7ado em recuperar o imagin\u00e1rio medieval, Korrodi defendeu a devolu\u00e7\u00e3o da impon\u00eancia hist\u00f3rica ao monumento, que tinha antes do abandono a que foi votado ao longo dos s\u00e9culos.<\/p>

Actualmente, o recinto amuralhado \u00e9 um agrad\u00e1vel espa\u00e7o de passeio que se transformou o ex-libris de Leiria, “observando” do alto do morro a evolu\u00e7\u00e3o da cidade.<\/p>

Leiria Castle<\/b><\/p>

Coming up from the city, visitors enter Leiria Castle through the Albacara Gateway. Inside this defensive bastion, there are various historical points of interest that have been well preserved. They include the Church of Nossa Senhora da Pena, the former Royal Palaces and the Keep in addition to wonderful views out over the surrounding countryside.<\/p>

The architecture clearly indicates the medieval origins of this city. It was conquered by the first king of Portugal Afonso Henriques in 1135. He ordered a small chapel be built in honour of Our Lady of Mercy before handing over this military stronghold to Paio Guterres, the first governor of Leiria. Towards the end of the century, the castle walls were reinforced by king Sancho I after the region was finally secured by the Christian crusaders.<\/p>

Far removed from its original role, the Castle again took on a prominent role in the city\u2019s history at the beginning of the 20th century. It was innovatively restored by Ernesto Korrodi and the Liga dos Amigos do Castelo (League of Castle Friends). Together, they did much to improve Leiria\u2019s urban landscape.<\/p>

This local is full of history. Pia do Urso Village<\/b> offers visitors a truly breathtaking natural landscape, where you can also enjoy the magnificent restoration work of the typical houses of this mountain region, where stone and wood are constituted as the main materials used.<\/p>

This restored village, is also installed the first ECOPARQUE SENSORY for the Blind of Portugal.<\/p>

5 \u2013 Grutas da Moeda<\/a><\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

As Grutas da Moeda situam-se em S. Mamede, concelho da Batalha, apenas a 2 km de F\u00e1tima. A sua descoberta aconteceu em 1971, por dois ca\u00e7adores que perseguiam uma raposa que se ter\u00e1 refugiado num algar existente no meio do bosque. Movidos pela curiosidade, entraram e percorrendo o seu interior aperceberam-se da sua beleza natural, com galerias repletas de in\u00fameras forma\u00e7\u00f5es calc\u00e1rias.<\/p>

Durante v\u00e1rios meses o local foi sendo explorado pelos dois homens, permitindo a descoberta de v\u00e1rias galerias que se viriam a revelar de interesse cient\u00edfico e tur\u00edstico e que hoje fazem parte da \u00e1rea visit\u00e1vel da gruta. Posteriormente, uma equipa de ge\u00f3logos e espele\u00f3logos confirmou o seu interesse cient\u00edfico, havendo desde esta fase e at\u00e9 aos dias de hoje, uma profunda preocupa\u00e7\u00e3o na preserva\u00e7\u00e3o rigorosa da gruta e de toda a \u00e1rea envolvente.<\/p>

A Lenda da Moeda<\/u><\/p>

Segundo a tradi\u00e7\u00e3o, em tempos idos, um homem abastado destas redondezas ao passar por um bosque, em torno de um algar, foi assaltado por um bando de malfeitores que lhe tentaram saquear a bolsa de moedas que trazia \u00e0 cintura. Com a confus\u00e3o do assalto, o homem caiu para dentro do algar, levando consigo a bolsa de moedas t\u00e3o cobi\u00e7ada pelos assaltantes. Pelo precip\u00edcio se espalharam e perderam irremediavelmente as moedas, dando ao algar o nome pelo qual ainda hoje \u00e9 conhecido – Algar da Moeda.<\/p>

Coin Caves<\/b><\/p>

The Grutas da Moeda (Coin Caves<\/b>) is located in S. Mamede, municipality of Batalha, only 2km from F\u00e1tima. They are part of a limestone Massif called the \u201cMaci\u00e7o Calc\u00e1rio Estremenho\u201d, being of its main touristic attractions. Its discovery happened in 1971. As two hunters while chasing a fox, saw it enter by one natural hole under the bushes. Moved by curiosity, they decided to enter in the galleries full of beautiful limestone formations. Then they realized about its natural beauty.<\/p>

For some months, the two men kept exploring, reaching the galleries which revealed to be very interesting for scientific exploration and touristic exploitation. These same galleries are actually what we visit today. Later, a group of geologists and speleologists confirmed the Caves\u2019 scientific importance. Along the years, the main concern was and still is to preserve rigorously, not only the Caves, but also its surrounding.<\/p>

\u201cLenda da Moeda\u201d (Legend relating to the name of the Coin Cave)<\/u><\/p>

According to the oral tradition, many years ago, a wealthy man from this region, passing through the woods, around a sinkhole, was attacked by a gang of criminals who tried to loot the bag of coins he was carrying at the waist. With the struggle of the assault, the man fell into a sinkhole, carrying the bag of coins coveted by the burglars. Through the sinkhole were hopelessly spread the lost coins, giving the sinkhole the name which it is known today \u2013 Algar da Moeda (Coin Sinkhole).<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

6 \u2013 Santu\u00e1rio de F\u00e1tima<\/a><\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

O Santu\u00e1rio de Nossa Senhora do Ros\u00e1rio de F\u00e1tima d\u00e1 express\u00e3o ao pedido de Nossa Senhora do Ros\u00e1rio, aludido j\u00e1 em 13 de agosto de 1917 e expressamente indicado na apari\u00e7\u00e3o de 13 de outubro desse ano a L\u00facia de Jesus, Francisco Marto e Jacinta Marto: \u00abQuero dizer-te que fa\u00e7am aqui uma capela em minha honra, que sou a Senhora do Ros\u00e1rio\u00bb (Primeira Mem\u00f3ria da Irm\u00e3 L\u00facia). A capelinha foi erguida em 1919 no local das apari\u00e7\u00f5es de 1917 na Cova da Iria e, desde ent\u00e3o, o espa\u00e7o do Santu\u00e1rio foi sendo edificado, em resposta ao significativo afluxo de peregrinos.<\/p>

O Santu\u00e1rio de F\u00e1tima \u00e9 local de peregrina\u00e7\u00e3o, que faz mem\u00f3ria do seu acontecimento fundante, as apari\u00e7\u00f5es de Nossa Senhora aos tr\u00eas pastorinhos. O acolhimento pastoral dos peregrinos \u00e9 elemento primordial da sua miss\u00e3o.<\/p>

O Santu\u00e1rio de F\u00e1tima custodia a mensagem do acontecimento de F\u00e1tima. \u00c9 sua miss\u00e3o o estudo e a difus\u00e3o desta mensagem, trabalhada como meio de evangeliza\u00e7\u00e3o em Portugal e no mundo.<\/p>

The Shrine of our Lady of the Rosary of Fatima<\/b> is the answer to the call of Our Lady of the Rosary, already alluded to on August 13, 1917 and expressly asked in the apparition of October 13, of that year to Lucia de Jesus, Francisco Marto and Jacinta Marto: \u00abI want to tell you that a chapel is to be built here in my honour. I am the Lady of the Rosary\u00bb (Fist Memoir of Sister Lucia). The little chapel was constructed in 1919 in the place of the apparitions of 1917 at the Cova da Iria and, since then, the place of the Shrine was built up, in response to a significant inflow of pilgrims.<\/p>

A funda\u00e7\u00e3o da Abadia de Santa Maria de Alcoba\u00e7a e respetiva Carta de Couto<\/i> datam de 8 de Abril de 1153.<\/p>

Os dom\u00ednios da Ordem de Cister ficam assim consagrados. Os do Reino de Portugal, com a conquista das cidades de Santar\u00e9m e de Lisboa, em 1147, avan\u00e7aram para sul em dire\u00e7\u00e3o \u00e0 Linha do Tejo. Este facto, obrigava a um povoamento r\u00e1pido e eficaz para que a expans\u00e3o crist\u00e3 continuasse para sul. O ponto fulcral e irradiador de toda esta din\u00e2mica de povoamento e defesa do territ\u00f3rio era a pr\u00f3pria abadia. A sua constru\u00e7\u00e3o foi iniciada em 1178.<\/p>

A import\u00e2ncia do Mosteiro de Alcoba\u00e7a evoluiu num crescendo cultural, religioso e ideol\u00f3gico. A sua monumentalidade \u00e9 tanto mais evidente quanto mais l\u00edmpida e austera \u00e9 a sua arquitetura. Trata-se, de resto, do primeiro ensaio de arquitetura g\u00f3tica em Portugal: um modelo que ficou sem imediata continuidade e que n\u00e3o foi reproduzido a n\u00e3o ser muito mais tarde, funcionando como um p\u00f3lo quase isolado, uma j\u00f3ia branca na paisagem. \u00c9 l\u00e1 que podemos encontrar os t\u00famulos de D. Pedro I e D. In\u00eas de Castro, protagonistas de uma lend\u00e1ria hist\u00f3ria de amor.<\/p>

Alcoba\u00e7a Monastery<\/b><\/p>

The complex of Alcoba\u00e7a Monastery is one of the most notable and best conserved examples of Cistercian architecture and spatial philosophy.<\/p>

Alcoba\u00e7a was the last abbey founded in St. Bernard\u2019s lifetime and the first wholly Gothic building in Portugal. The abbey was founded in 1153, when King Afonso Henriques donated the land to Bernard of Clairvaux (St. Bernard).<\/p>

Construction work on the building as we see it today only began in 1178 and lasted several decades, which is understandable considering the absolutely exceptional dimensions of the project.<\/p>

The chosen site, set in rich and fertile land, coincided with the Cistercian policy of agrarian development. A special canal system was built to diverting drinking water from the River Alcoa; the hydraulic system is impressive for the technical solutions applied. The whole surrounding region was covered with granges, vineyards, orchards and arable land claimed from forests and marshes by means of assartment.<\/p>

The transept currently houses the tombs of King Pedro and Lady In\u00eas de Castro.<\/p>

A praia da Nazar\u00e9, de clima ameno e com uma beleza natural, tem das mais antigas tradi\u00e7\u00f5es de Portugal ligadas \u00e0s artes da pesca. O longo areal em forma de meia-lua, e que \u00e9 tamb\u00e9m a frente de mar da cidade, \u00e9 conhecido pela sua grandeza e pelos toldos de cores vivas que decoram a praia de areia branca em contraste com o azul da \u00e1gua.<\/p>

Esta \u00e9 a praia de Portugal onde as tradi\u00e7\u00f5es da pesca s\u00e3o mais coloridas e n\u00e3o \u00e9 raro cruzarmo-nos com as peixeiras que ainda usam as sete saias, como manda a tradi\u00e7\u00e3o.<\/p>

Virados para o mar, do lado direito, vemos um impressionante promont\u00f3rio. Trata-se do S\u00edtio, onde temos uma das mais conhecidas panor\u00e2micas da costa portuguesa. S\u00e3o 318 metros de rocha a cair a pique at\u00e9 ao mar, a que se chega a p\u00e9, para os mais corajosos, ou subindo de ascensor. No alto, encontramos a pequena Ermida da Mem\u00f3ria, onde se conta a lenda do milagre que Nossa Senhora fez impedindo o cavalo de um fidalgo, D. Fuas Roupinho, de se lan\u00e7ar no precip\u00edcio.<\/p>

Atualmente, a grande atra\u00e7\u00e3o desta cidade s\u00e3o as ondas e o surf, gra\u00e7as ao \u201cCanh\u00e3o da Nazar\u00e9\u201d, um fen\u00f3meno geomorfol\u00f3gico submarino que permite a forma\u00e7\u00e3o de ondas gigantes e perfeitas. Trata-se do maior desfiladeiro submerso da Europa, com cerca de 170 quil\u00f3metros ao longo da costa, que chega a ter 5000 metros de profundidade.<\/p>

O surfista havaiano Garrett McNamara deu-lhe a visibilidade mundial quando, em 2011, fez a maior onda do mundo em fundo de areia, com cerca de 30 metros, na Praia do Norte, vencendo o pr\u00e9mio Billabong XXL Global BigWave Awards e batendo um record do Guiness Book. \u00c0 sua semelhan\u00e7a, surfistas de todo o mundo visitam a Nazar\u00e9 todos os anos para se aventurarem no mar, sobretudo durante o Inverno. Entre Novembro e Mar\u00e7o, aguarda-se pacientemente que as maiores ondas se revelem, durante uma longa etapa do campeonato mundial de ondas gigantes, o Nazar\u00e9 Tow Surfing Challenge. Na praia, os banhos de sol tamb\u00e9m s\u00e3o apreciados e uma excelente plateia para apreciar as proezas destes jovens.<\/p>

Para conhecer a Nazar\u00e9 n\u00e3o se dispensa um passeio descontra\u00eddo pelas ruas estreitas, perpendiculares \u00e0 praia, e uma pausa num dos restaurantes para saborear um prato de marisco fresco, peixe grelhado ou uma apetitosa caldeirada. E ao cair da tarde, nada como apreciar o sol poente numa qualquer esplanada com vista para o mar, enquanto as luzes se acendem e anoitece.<\/p>

Nazar\u00e9 beach<\/b>, with its mild climate and natural beauty, has one of the most ancient traditions connected to fishing in Portugal.<\/p>

The long sandy half-moon shaped beach, which is also the town\u2019s sea front, is known for its grandeur and for the brightly-coloured awnings that decorate the white sandy beaches, contrasting with the blue of the water.<\/p>

This is the beach in Portugal that retains the more colourful fishing traditions, and it\u2019s not uncommon to encounter fishmongers who still wear the traditional seven skirts.<\/p>

Facing the sea on the right, you will see an impressive headland. This is S\u00edtio, which provides one of the most famous views of the Portuguese coast. It is a 318 metre rock face with a sheer drop to the sea, and is reached on foot by the bravest, or by going up the funicular. At the top sits the Ermida da Mem\u00f3ria chapel, famous for the legend of the miracle that Our Lady made to prevent the horse of the nobleman, D. Fuas Roupinho, leaping over the precipice.<\/p>

These days, Nazar\u00e9\u2019s major attractions are the waves and surfing, thanks to the “Nazar\u00e9 Canyon”, a submarine geomorphological phenomenon that allows the formation of perfect giant waves. It is the largest underwater canyon in Europe, about 170 kilometres along the coast, reaching a depth of 5,000 metres.<\/p>

The Hawaiian surfer Garrett McNamara received worldwide publicity when, in 2011, rode the biggest beach-breaking wave in the world, about 30 metres high, at Praia do Norte. He won the Billabong XXL Global BigWave Award and entered the Guinness Book of World Records. Like him, surfers from around the world visit Nazar\u00e9 every year to venture into the sea. The beach also attracts sunbathers, who provide a great audience to appreciate the stunts of the young surfers.<\/p>

Take the opportunity of a casual stroll through the narrow streets perpendicular to the beach to get to know Nazar\u00e9 better. Take a break in one of the restaurants to enjoy a plate of fresh seafood, grilled fish or an appetising bouillabaisse. 9 \u2013 Convento de Cristo e cidade de Tomar<\/a><\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Antiga sede da Ordem dos Templ\u00e1rios, Tomar \u00e9 uma cidade de grande encanto, pela sua riqueza art\u00edstica e cultural. O expoente m\u00e1ximo est\u00e1 no Convento de Cristo, uma das mais importantes obras do Renascimento em Portugal.<\/p>

Qualquer que seja o motivo para visitar a cidade, subir ao castelo templ\u00e1rio e descobrir a obra monumental do Convento de Cristo \u00e9 imprescind\u00edvel. A Charola \u00e9 a parte mais antiga. Este orat\u00f3rio templ\u00e1rio foi constru\u00eddo no s\u00e9c. XII, assim como o castelo, que na \u00e9poca era o mais moderno e avan\u00e7ado dispositivo militar do reino, inspirado nas fortifica\u00e7\u00f5es da Terra Santa. Foi transformada em Capela-Mor aquando da reconstru\u00e7\u00e3o ordenada por D. Manuel I, no s\u00e9c. XVI, altura em que o conjunto ganhou o esplendor arquitet\u00f3nico que ainda hoje se preserva e que lhe justificou a classifica\u00e7\u00e3o como Patrim\u00f3nio da Humanidade.<\/p>

A \u00e1rea urbana mais antiga, medieval, organiza-se em cruz, orientada pelos pontos cardeais e tendo um convento em cada extremo. A Pra\u00e7a da Rep\u00fablica, com a Igreja Matriz dedicada a S\u00e3o Jo\u00e3o Baptista marca o centro, tendo a oeste a colina do Castelo e do Convento de Cristo. Nas ruas em redor podemos encontrar lojas de com\u00e9rcio tradicional e o caf\u00e9 mais antigo onde se podem apreciar as del\u00edcias da pastelaria local: queijadas de am\u00eandoa e de chila e as tradicionais Fatias de Tomar, confecionadas apenas com gemas de ovos e cozidas em banho-maria numa panela muito especial, inventada por um latoeiro da cidade em meados do s\u00e9culo passado.<\/p>

Para descansar do passeio cultural, nada como uma pausa no Parque do Mouch\u00e3o. \u00c9 um lugar fresco, onde se pode ver a Roda do Mouch\u00e3o, uma roda hidr\u00e1ulica em madeira. \u00c9 um ex-libris da cidade e evoca os tempos em que os moinhos, os lagares e as \u00e1reas de cultivo ao longo do rio contribu\u00edam para a prosperidade econ\u00f3mica de Tomar.<\/p>

Convent of Christ and Tomar, a Templar City<\/b><\/p>

Former seat of the Order of the Knights Templar, Tomar is a city of great charm for its artistic and cultural wealth, whose greatest expression is in the Convent of Christ, one of the chief works of the Portuguese Renaissance.<\/p>

Whatever your reason for visiting the city, climbing up to the Templar castle and discovering the monumental work of the Convent of Christ is a must. The Charola (Rotunda) is the oldest part. This Templar chapel was built in the 12th century, like the castle, which was at the time the Kingdom\u2019s most up-to-date and advanced military set-up, inspired by the fortifications of the Holy Land.<\/p>

To better understand its history, it\u2019s important to know how the Order of the Knights Templar became the Order of Christ, upholding their power, knowledge and wealth in Portugal. The famous Henry, the Navigator, the mentor of the Discoveries, was one of its most important governors and protectors.<\/p>

Then you must visit Tomar. The oldest mediaeval urban area has a cross-shaped layout, orientated along the points of the compass, with a convent at each end The surrounding streets are lined with traditional shops, including the oldest caf\u00e9 where the delights of the local pastries can be appreciated: almond and squash queijadas (cheese cakes) and the traditional Fatias de Tomar (Tomar slices) made with just egg yolks and cooked in a bain-marie in a very special pot, invented by a local tinsmith in the mid-20th century.<\/p>

For a rest from the cultural tour there\u2019s nothing better than a break in Mouch\u00e3o Park. This is a cool place where you can see the Mouch\u00e3o Wheel, a wooden water wheel, which is a landmark of the city and evokes the time when mills, oil presses and farmland along the river all contributed to Tomar\u2019s economic prosperity.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

A vila medieval de \u00d3bidos \u00e9 uma das mais pitorescas e bem preservadas de Portugal.<\/p>

Suficientemente perto da capital e situada num ponto alto, pr\u00f3ximo da costa atl\u00e2ntica, \u00d3bidos teve uma import\u00e2ncia estrat\u00e9gica no territ\u00f3rio. J\u00e1 ocupada antes de os romanos chegarem \u00e0 Pen\u00ednsula Ib\u00e9rica, a vila tornou-se mais pr\u00f3spera a partir do momento em que foi escolhida pela fam\u00edlia real. Desde que o rei D. Dinis a ofereceu a sua esposa D. Isabel, no s\u00e9c. XIII, ficou a pertencer \u00e0 Casa das Rainhas que, ao longo das v\u00e1rias dinastias, a foram beneficiando e enriquecendo. \u00c9 uma das principais raz\u00f5es para se encontrarem tantas igrejas nesta pequena localidade.<\/p>

Dentro de muralhas, encontramos um castelo bem conservado e um labirinto de ruas e casas brancas que encantam quem por ali se passeia. Entre p\u00f3rticos manuelinos, janelas floridas e pequenos largos, encontram-se v\u00e1rios motivos de visita, bons exemplos da arquitetura religiosa e civil dos tempos \u00e1ureos da vila.<\/p>

Na gastronomia local, destaca-se a caldeirada de peixe da Lagoa de \u00d3bidos, ainda melhor se acompanhada pelos vinhos da Regi\u00e3o Demarcada do Oeste. Outra atra\u00e7\u00e3o \u00e9 a c\u00e9lebre Ginjinha de \u00d3bidos, que se pode apreciar em v\u00e1rios locais, de prefer\u00eancia num copinho de chocolate.<\/p>

N\u00e3o muito longe, fica o extenso areal da Praia d\u2019El Rey, onde os golfistas podem apreciar um campo de golfe com vista para o mar atl\u00e2ntico. Passando a cidade das Caldas da Rainha, cuja hist\u00f3ria tamb\u00e9m est\u00e1 ligada \u00e0 Casa das Rainhas, encontra-se a praia da Foz do Arelho, ligando a Lagoa de \u00d3bidos ao mar. Um bom local para um almo\u00e7o de marisco e peixe fresco ou para um fim de tarde ao p\u00f4r-do-sol, \u00e0 beira-mar.<\/p>

The mediaeval town of \u00d3bidos<\/b> is one of the most picturesque and well preserved in Portugal.<\/p>

Quite close to the capital and located on high ground near the Atlantic coast, \u00d3bidos has had a strategic importance in the territory. It had already been settled prior to the Romans\u2019 arrival in the Iberian Peninsula, and the town prospered after being chosen by the royal family. King Dinis offered it to his wife, Queen Isabel, in the 13th century, and it became part of Casa das Rainhas (Queens\u2019 Estate), who improved and enriched it throughout the various dynasties. This is one of the main reasons for the high concentration of churches in this small place.<\/p>

You will find a well preserved castle within the walls, and a maze of streets and white houses that are a delight to stroll amongst. Along with the Manueline porticoes, the colourful window boxes and the small squares, many fine examples of religious and civil architecture from the town\u2019s golden days provide a host of reasons for making a visit.<\/p>

The local cuisine features bouillabaisse made with fish from the \u00d3bidos Lagoon, which will taste even better if accompanied by the wines of the region of Oeste. Another attraction is the famous Ginjinha de \u00d3bidos (sour cherry brandy), which can be enjoyed in various places, preferably drunk from a small chocolate cup.<\/p>

Not far away, is the long stretch of sand of the El Rey Beach, where golfers can revel in a golf course with a view over the Atlantic Ocean. Beyond Caldas da Rainha, whose history is also linked to Casa das Rainhas, you will find the beach of Foz do Arelho, which links the \u00d3bidos Lagoon to the sea. This is a wonderful spot for a seafood or fresh fish lunch or for a late afternoon by the sea watching the sunset.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
